President Emmanuel Macron declared the Friday shooting in Trappes a premeditated racist terror attack following a 15-minute drive-by that left one person dead and at least five others wounded. The gunman fired from a moving vehicle through the Paris suburb and neighboring La Verriere before officers from the anti-crime brigade stopped the rampage.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez stated that the weapon used was military-grade or at least automatic. The attack concluded in the nearby town of Coignieres, where the suspect was taken into custody. Nuñez confirmed the incident lasted just under 15 minutes and that five officers were involved in ending it.
Trappes mayor Ali Rabeh described the suspect as driving through both towns while firing at random. He noted that the gunman targeted passersby at three specific locations, including a playground. Rabeh characterized the event as a probable first attempted mass killing motivated by Islamophobia and racism, calling it a miracle that the casualty count was not higher. The mayor of La Verriere, Nicolas Dainville, reported that a 12-year-old girl was shot eight times and is currently in stable condition.
Witnesses provided conflicting initial details about the sequence of events. A resident named Samy reported seeing a body from his window while his mother described hearing loud bangs as a gray Renault Clio sped past. Forensic investigators later examined evidence at a nearby gas station. Rabeh stated that the victim was of African origin, while one critically wounded victim is of North African origin. Officials initially reported four wounded but later corrected the figure to five, with three of those injured in serious condition.
Prosecutors have opened an investigation for murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise. They are examining whether the attacks targeted the real or supposed race, ethnicity, nationality, or religion of the victims. The National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office placed three additional individuals from the suspect's family and circle of friends into police custody on Friday evening. The suspect has four prior convictions that have been legally expunged but has not been publicly identified.
The shooting occurred during a period of heightened national tension due to cost-of-living protests and overnight curfews. Approximately 70,000 police officers and gendarmes are deployed for expected demonstrations on Saturday. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu stated on social media that all security and judicial resources are fully mobilized. Macron added that the nation is standing with the victims.
Major cultural institutions have reacted to the security concerns. The Louvre and other major Paris museums will close, and Art Basel Paris has canceled its weekend program. Nuñez promised an uncompromising response to any violence or vandalism during the upcoming demonstrations.
