The National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor's Office has formally charged a 39-year-old man with murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise. The indictment follows a 15-minute shooting spree in the Paris suburbs that left one person dead and five others injured.
The suspect, identified by French media as Kevin T, drove a grey Renault Clio through Trappes and La Verrière. Witnesses reported he fired an older-style semi-automatic weapon at people of migrant origin. The attack began at a petrol station and a medical center in Trappes before moving to a playground. Police detained him on the main road in La Verrière.
One victim died, and three others remain in serious condition, including a 12-year-old girl. The child sustained eight gunshot wounds and requires surgery. Her mother told RTL that her daughter wore a headscarf at the time and was born in Trappes. The mother questioned whether the headscarf influenced the attacker's choice of target.
President Emmanuel Macron visited the scene and described the incident as a racist terrorist attack. He stated that the event marked a turning point for the Republic. Macron said victims were singled out based on skin color or religion. He urged the public to resist ideologies taking root in society.
The prosecutor's office noted that Kevin T had four previous convictions that were automatically expunged. He was known to police but not to intelligence services. A member of his immediate family circle was also taken into custody on Friday. The investigation includes charges for possession of a Category A weapon and conspiracy to prepare crimes against persons.
Trappes mayor Ali Rabeh said the gunman fired randomly. Rabeh stated the attacker hoped to cause as many casualties as possible. A local police chief told BFMTV the weapon was a semi-automatic firearm. Le Parisien reported the gun dated back to World War Two. The precise motive for the attack has not yet been fully established by investigators.
