Families in southwest Bakersfield gathered on Sunday for a free trunk-or-treat event, seeking community support and holiday activities before the official start of Halloween. The line of visitors extended around the parking lot of Clinica Sierra Vista, the organization hosting the afternoon gathering.
The clinic, which is celebrating its 55th anniversary, organized the event to provide a no-cost option for local residents. Dr. Olga Meave, the clinic's CEO, stated that the organization recognized the financial strain many families face. She said the clinic accepts opportunities to provide free services to the community because the current situation is difficult for everyone.
Volunteers decorated car trunks with seasonal themes and filled them with candy for attendees. Children and adults arrived in costumes, and the free admission allowed groups to participate without budget concerns. Jamie Lujan, a grandmother attending with her family, noted that the lack of cost was the primary draw. She explained that attending without worrying about expenses or potential hidden costs made a real difference for her household.
The event served a dual purpose beyond entertainment. Community organizations used the high foot traffic to connect residents with available resources across Kern County. Hannah Weightman of the Community Action Partnership of Kern decorated her vehicle with a Hocus Pocus theme to attract visitors.
Weightman said the gathering provided a direct channel to inform residents about assistance programs. She observed that many people are unaware of the services available to them, and the informal setting allowed for clear communication about those options.
