A 36-year-old woman from Stapleford, Nottinghamshire, died in the Bahamas on Tuesday after attempting to save her two sons from a powerful current. The Royal Bahamas Police Force opened an investigation into the sudden death at the North Bimini Ferry Dock.
Police reported that the woman was snorkeling with her husband and children near the southern point of Bimini. A strong current swept both boys away. The woman was carried off as she swam toward them. The two boys were later pulled from the water.
Officers at the Alice Town police station received a call shortly after 10 a.m. local time stating that a woman was unresponsive at the ferry dock. Responding officers found that she had already been transported to a local clinic for treatment.
A doctor at the clinic pronounced the woman dead despite efforts to revive her. Police said CPR was administered at the dock after she was rescued from the water. The force stated that foul play is not suspected at this time. An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.
A Foreign Office spokesperson said officials are in contact with local authorities and providing support to the family. The spokesperson expressed sympathy for the loss of the British woman.
