Latvia’s National Armed Forces confirmed on Saturday, October 24, 2026, that they have located the wreckage of a drone that descended onto the country’s soil. The debris was recovered in the Alūksne district, bringing a conclusion to a search that had been suspended just days after the initial incident.

The military indicated that the unmanned aerial vehicle most likely breached Latvian airspace on October 18. The discovery resolves a significant gap in the timeline, as the search for the crash site had previously been halted after two days. Officials at the time determined that the available data was insufficient to establish the nature of the event, leading them to pause operations.

The incident first gained public attention following reports of a loud noise that sounded like an explosion. Both the National Armed Forces and the State Police mobilized to investigate the potential crash site. However, the lack of clear evidence forced a temporary standstill in the inquiry until the debris was finally identified this week.

Authorities have launched a formal investigation to determine the specific circumstances surrounding the descent. An internal review is also underway to evaluate how the incident unfolded and to analyze the factors that contributed to the drone entering national territory. This dual approach aims to clarify both the technical and procedural aspects of the event.

The military emphasized that no civilians were injured during the incident. Furthermore, civilian infrastructure sustained no damage, and officials have not identified any additional threats to the public. The situation appears contained, with the focus now shifting to understanding the origin and purpose of the flight.

This development follows a similar episode in neighboring Lithuania. On October 18, the wreckage of a suspected drone that violated airspace was found in the village of Juodžionys, located in the Pasvalys district. Lithuanian authorities stated that the aircraft entered their airspace from Poland. Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius noted that the drone contained explosives, highlighting the potential severity of such incursions.

Heorhii Tykhyi, the spokesman for Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, suggested that the Lithuanian incident was likely the result of Russian electronic warfare measures. He added that Ukraine expressed regret over the occurrence, linking the two events in a broader regional context of aerial activity.
