Tesla disclosed this week that it has reached 1.74 million active Full Self-Driving subscriptions, a figure that represents a 67 percent increase from the same period last year. The company presented this milestone in its third-quarter 2026 shareholder letter, which details its performance metrics and strategic outlook for the coming months.

A specific footnote in the document clarifies the calculation method used for this total. The metric is designed to align with the 2025 CEO Performance Award structure. Consequently, the count includes both customers who pay a monthly fee and those who purchased the software package with a lump sum upfront. This approach means that owners who bought the system years ago remain in the active subscriber pool as long as their vehicles are operational.

This counting method carries significant weight because one of the key operational milestones for Elon Musk’s compensation package requires the company to achieve 10 million active FSD subscriptions. The definition also includes hundreds of thousands of customers who were originally sold the promise of unsupervised self-driving capabilities, a feature Tesla has not yet fully delivered to all markets.

The shift in sales strategy contributed to this growth. Tesla ceased selling FSD as a one-time purchase on February 14, 2026. Since that date, new customers in the United States have been required to subscribe to the service at a monthly rate of 99 dollars. However, previous buyers who paid upfront, with prices reaching as high as 15,000 dollars, continue to be included in the active count. The only segment excluded from this total consists of users on free trials.

In April, the company reported a lower figure of 1.28 million under the same definition. Six months later, Tesla has not specified how many of the current 1.74 million customers are paying the monthly fee versus those who paid upfront. The same alignment with compensation goals appears in the company’s cumulative delivery numbers. The total now stands at 10.2 million, a figure that also includes unsupervised robotaxis placed into commercial operation, mirroring the 20 million vehicle milestone in the pay package.

The shareholder letter also highlights a 75 percent attach rate for FSD among new North American deliveries in the third quarter. Tesla described this as a nearly 20 percentage point increase from the previous quarter and attributed it to FSD driving demand in available markets. The company did not define whether this rate accounts for introductory offers or how many of those buyers remain paying customers after several months.

Musk’s 2025 award consists of 12 tranches, each requiring specific market capitalization and operational targets. The operational list includes delivering 20 million vehicles, reaching 10 million active FSD subscriptions, deploying 1 million Optimus robots, and operating 1 million robotaxis. As of June 30, Tesla considered only the vehicle delivery target to be probable. The company added 260,000 net FSD subscriptions in the third quarter, marking its strongest quarter to date.

At the current quarterly pace, Tesla would need approximately eight years to reach the 10 million subscription goal. If it maintains the average annual growth of roughly 700,000 subscribers seen over the past 12 months, the timeline extends to about 12 years. The compensation award remains in effect until 2035.
