Arsenal drew level with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League on Saturday after beating Everton 2-0 in heavy rain, the same day City fell 2-1 at Aston Villa. Both clubs now sit on 21 points through eight matches.
Ezri Konsa put Arsenal ahead in the seventh minute, bundling in from close range after Martin Odegaard's corner caused trouble in the Everton box and Jordan Pickford's save was not cleared. It was Konsa's first goal for the club and Arsenal's first set-piece goal since May, ending a run of 13 games in all competitions without one. Ben White, playing his 200th game for Arsenal, set up Gabriel's header in the 68th minute, Gabriel's 200th Premier League appearance.
"We are champions and to be champions you've got to win games consistently," Konsa said. "This is our home, and we want to win as many games here as possible."
At Villa Park, Nicolas Jackson scored twice for Aston Villa. He struck in the sixth minute after John McGinn won the ball from Marc Guehi's heavy touch, and he got the winner on the hour after Ibrahim Mbaye's cutback, his shot slipping under Gianluigi Donnarumma. Erling Haaland headed in Iliman Ndiaye's free-kick after halftime for City. Villa climbed to sixth on 11 points with a third straight league win over City. Nicolas Jackson told TNT Sports, "It's just the beginning; we're trying to work game by game."
City are awaiting an appeal after an independent commission found they committed 114 breaches of Premier League financial rules. The club has always denied wrongdoing.
Tottenham Hotspur won 2-0 at Chelsea, their second league victory at Stamford Bridge in 36 years. Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders, making his first league start, punched a corner into his own net in the 77th minute. Cole Palmer was sent off for a second yellow card in the 80th minute, and Mathys Tel scored in the 87th. Fulham beat Coventry City 1-0 on Oscar Bobb's 80th-minute curling finish. Everton sit ninth, Spurs 12th, Fulham 13th, and Coventry 19th.
Mathys Tel said, "It's very special, because we came here a lot of times and didn't get a win."
