Bayern Munich will field its first team under assistant coach Aaron Danks on Sunday against Freiburg, following the hospitalization of head coach Vincent Kompany. The club announced the coaching arrangement on Saturday, one day after Kompany collapsed on the training pitch. The 40-year-old manager remains in a hospital in a stable condition while medical staff investigate the specific nature of the virus affecting him.
Director of Sport Max Eberl addressed the media on Saturday to detail the club's next steps. He stated that examinations are ongoing to identify the illness, but no specific recovery timeline has been established. Eberl emphasized that the absence would be measured in weeks rather than days. He noted that the club needs to fully understand the medical situation before discussing a return to duty. "Vinnie will be given all the time he needs. We're not starting to put together any timeframes," Eberl said.
Danks, who is English, will lead the team for the Bundesliga fixture at Freiburg. He led the news conference in Kompany's absence and described a brief phone conversation with the former Manchester City and Belgium captain on Friday. Danks said the call was focused on health checks rather than tactical planning. "I explained to him that we wouldn't be having no football conversations. It was just checking in on his health and making sure he's OK," Danks said.
The club did not seek to postpone the Bundesliga match against Freiburg. Eberl argued that a strong performance and a positive result would serve as the best support for Kompany's recovery. "That would probably be one of the best things we could do to help him recover," he said. Bayern's second team match was postponed on Friday following the initial collapse, but the first team's schedule remains unchanged for the weekend.
Germany international Joshua Kimmich will also miss the game in Freiburg. Danks confirmed that the captain has been on bereavement leave since Tuesday and will not return for Sunday's fixture. Kompany had returned to the dugout for Wednesday's home match against Arsenal despite missing the pre-match press conference due to the virus. He later admitted to ignoring early warning signs of his illness. "I caught a pretty nasty virus last week, and of course, I didn't listen to my body, and then at some point, my body just said, 'Enough is enough!" Kompany said.
Bayern Munich enters Sunday's match leading the Bundesliga table by one point over Freiburg. The team's next major fixture is a Champions League away game against Atletico Madrid in Spain on November 3.
