Manchester City players left Villa Park on Saturday evening having lost their first Premier League match of the season. The 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa snapped a run of seven straight victories, which had set a record for the most wins in a manager's first season with a new club in the league.

The match began with a defensive mistake by Marc Guehi. His heavy touch allowed Nicolas Jackson to collect the ball in the sixth minute. Jackson cut inside Elliott Anderson and fired a high shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma to give Aston Villa the lead.

City controlled possession for most of the first half but could not find a way past Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. Iliman Ndiaye, Rayan Cherki, and Abdukodir Khusanov all had shots blocked or saved. Ndiaye also struck the post before halftime.

Erling Haaland equalized in the 52nd minute with a header from a Ndiaye cross. It was his 13th goal in 10 appearances this season. Josko Gvardiol had a chance to put City ahead moments later, but his powerful drive hit the crossbar after being deflected by Suzuki.

Aston Villa regained the lead in the 60th minute. Ibrahim Mbaye crossed the ball from behind the City defense, and Jackson finished low past Donnarumma. City pressed for a late equalizer but could not break through the Villa defense.

The result keeps Manchester City at the top of the table, though Arsenal can level the standings if they beat Everton later on Saturday. For Villa, the win was their sixth in seven games across all competitions, moving them into sixth place.

Unai Emery has rebuilt the Villa squad over four years, transforming the club into a Champions League contender. Despite losing six players who started in last season's Europa League final, new summer signings like Jackson, Suzuki, and Mbaye have performed well. City, meanwhile, continues its season while appealing a guilty verdict on more than 100 financial rule violations from 2009 to 2018.
