The Wisconsin women's tennis team concluded a competitive weekend by defeating two opponents by identical 7-0 margins, a result that extends their unbeaten season record to six victories. On Saturday, the Badgers first defeated Bradley before shut out Green Bay in the second leg of the doubleheader. This performance marks the best start to a season for the program since 1992, establishing a strong foundation for the upcoming competitive calendar.
The statistical breakdown of the matches reflects a comprehensive dominance in both doubles and singles. In the doubles events, no Wisconsin player dropped a single set. The team secured early momentum that translated into a clean sweep of the singles competition. The Green Bay squad entered the second match with a reduced roster of only five available players, a factor that limited their ability to contest the pace set by the Badgers throughout the afternoon.
Freshman MaryAnn Rompf and senior Kelsey Grambeau led the charge in the first doubles match, defeating Theresa Tebon and Tallie Piaskowski with a 6-1 victory. Subsequently, sophomore Melissa Pick and freshman Lexi Keberle closed out the doubles session with a 6-0 win over Maria Neff and Samm Pedersen. This early success in the paired events set the stage for the individual competitions that followed.
In the singles division, the Wisconsin lineup maintained its perfect record without surrendering a set. Lexi Keberle, playing at first singles, defeated Tebon in straight sets with scores of 6-1 and 6-1. Keberle is currently unbeaten in both singles and doubles play, holding a combined season record of 7-0. MaryAnn Rompf also contributed a significant win, taking the second singles match against Piaskowski by a score of 6-3 and 6-1.
The remaining singles matches concluded with decisive victories for the Badgers. Michelle Linden defeated Sterre Tijssens at third singles with a 6-1, 6-0 scoreline. Melissa Pick shut out Maria Neff in a straight-set 6-0, 6-0 victory. At fifth singles, Christina Zordani defeated Samm Pedersen 6-0, 6-1, improving her own singles record for the season to 5-0. The consistent performance across all positions underscores the depth of the current roster.
Head coach Kelcy McKenna attributed the team's success to its focus on controllable factors, specifically attitude, effort, and energy. She emphasized that these elements are critical to the program's long-term success. McKenna noted that the team must continue to concentrate on the details in daily practice and match simulations to prepare for the National Indoors and the remainder of the spring season.
Despite the perfect record, McKenna identified specific areas for improvement, particularly within the doubles rotation. She stated that the team needs to refine its serves and returns to ensure they are the first to be aggressive. Additionally, she highlighted the importance of carrying the momentum from doubles points into singles play, urging the players to remain gritty and avoid giving away free points. The team will have its next opportunity to extend this winning streak when it hosts the National Team Indoor Championship from February 9 to 12.
